Chitwan Chapeaus

Chitwan Chapeaus

To continue the theme of chapeaus in Nepal, this is a look at the hats being worn in a typical Nepali village right outside Chitwan National Park. Most of the gents are sporting the Nepali Topi, but I don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind, especially not when it comes to hats so there are some others captured here as well. We’ve even got some lady caps this time.

Sherpa Chapeau: Traditional Headwear of Nepal’s Everest Region

Sherpa Chapeau: Traditional Headwear of Nepal’s Everest Region

If being invited to a wedding is an honor, than being invited to a traditional Sherpa wedding in Nepal is something akin to winning a Nobel Prize. We drank, laughed, and danced; but not before I took notice of some oddly unique caps floating atop the Sherpa clans noggins. Some are signs of social status, others of tradition, but all were just as interesting as the men who adorned them. This series highlights the headwear of Nepal’s Sherpa men. They come from the Everest Region, maybe you’ve heard of the place? Its home to all 8,848 meters (29,29 ft) of…

Things Made With Hands – Along the Annapurna Circuit

Things Made With Hands – Along the Annapurna Circuit

Thus far the Things Made With Hand series has had one subject, but there are few things that make me happier than breaking from the mold and changing direction, even when its a mold I developed. I spent most of November walking around Nepal’s Annapurna region, it was possibly one of the most exciting things I have ever done. The landscapes, the people, the unity with nature, it was all there. One of my favorite parts was how remote some of the villages were. The locals there are smart, and they figured out a long time ago that relying on anyone else…

Things Made With Hands: Rupa & Sarah

Things Made With Hands: Rupa & Sarah

The mother daughter team of Rupa & Sarah are heading straight to the top in the world of wool, at least in Kathmandu. This is the second installment of the Things Made With Hands series, where I am highlighting some amazing folks who, in this day of technology and automation, are still crafting the old fashion way – with their hands. Rupa got into the business over 10 years ago working on a loom to create yarn from raw wool. She couldn’t say the exact moment it happened, but something about knitting appealed to her. She recalled a feeling that was…

Things Made with Hands: Usha’s Jewelery

Things Made with Hands: Usha’s Jewelery

Welcome one and all to the start of ‘Things Made with Hands’. It’s a series in which I have explored, learned, documented, and am excited to share the art, craft, creations and masterpieces of wonderful folks from around Nepal who are making things with their hands. The talented craftswoman in the featured photo above is Usha, a Nepalese woman who taught herself to make jewelry and is now on a path of sharing her knowledge with others through workshops. Her inspiration came from jewelry that she had seen other women, both locals and tourists, wearing when she was a young girl in Kathmandu….

Working The Corner

Working The Corner

I wasn’t selling my body. Or drugs. But yesterday morning I ended up on a bustling corner in downtown Pokhara. The 5am alarm sounded right on time and I rolled out of bed to get ready, fully aware that I couldn’t use bad weather as an excuse. It has rained the day before, and earlier in the previous evening but sleeping in an open aired, tin roofed room makes it easy to be in touch with the current weather conditions. So I got up and walked down the road to meet the crew whom I would be sharing this adventure with. We had…

ArtLab Nepal: Prasad Project

ArtLab Nepal: Prasad Project

Lakshmi Prasad Devkota, a Nepali poet, was famous for the forward thinking and generous humanitarian values that manifested through his words. Art Lab, a Nepali art collective, chose to name this project ‘Prasad’ in part because it is their goal to share and educate; two ideals that he held in high regard. Prasad also translates into ‘a sweet offering’, something akin to the art and techniques they are sharing with a younger generation. The first phase of the project kicked off in April 2013 with collaborations on street art murals as well as gallery exhibitions. The combination of the two mediums…

Nepali Banda

Nepali Banda

Banda is Nepalese for ‘Strike’. This one took hold of the entire city, shutting everything down and making it dangerous for locals to drive. There are currently bandas in other regions of Nepal and soon there will be country-wide strike. This photo essay explores its effects on the locals of Pokhara. In featured photo above, a young worker contemplates how the banda will effect his work. So far there has been a noticeable lull in business for shops in Pokhara.

Through the Eyes of a Nepali Truckdriver

Through the Eyes of a Nepali Truckdriver

Despite the tens of thousands of trucks like this in India & Nepal, each one is uniquely loud and festive. Its been about 8 months since I first saw one, hurling down the road spewing diesel by the barrel full, and sounding the horns as if the ‘Red Coats Are Coming’. India in itself is vastly different from state to state, not to mention Nepal, a different country. So these trucks remaining constant through the entire landmass is at least noteworthy. If there were a  list of the top five photos that could represent ‘quintessential India’ these trucks would make…

Wise Words From A Tibetan Refugee Camp

Wise Words From A Tibetan Refugee Camp

Since the Chinese invasion late in 1950 many Tibetans have sought refuge in countries around the world. The Himalayas of Nepal were, and remain, a safe choice based on the geographical, cultural and religious similarities but no matter how similar the new place, it’s not home. So starting over, especially when it’s not by choice, must be harder than I could begin to imagine. But in good faith, the Tibetans seem to have a positive outlook on it. After all, their religion is centered around looking inwards and finding the happiness rather than searching for it in the outside/material world. That has…
